Jan Johnston draws and paints from nature in
watercolor, colored pencil, pastel, and recently, in
oils. Trained in theater and botany, she received her
Master’s Degree in Theater Design from The
University of Washington. She designed for
theaters and taught costume design at universities
in Washington, Louisiana, and Illinois.
A lifelong love for the outdoors and small town living
brought her to Leavenworth four years ago, where
she reconnected with art that portrays natural
themes.
The vintage window to the right (and the detail photo)
consists of 5 watercolor panels of local flowers. The lower panels
are hand-made paper containing fragments of those flowers.

Artist Statement
To me nothing evokes emotion the way the natural
world does. From earliest memory, nature made the
greatest impact on me. The tiniest dewdrop or leaf
can represent a universe of meaning. My work as
an artist is a never ending exploration of that
universe.
